Tips for creating an outreach demo/activity

1. Initial idea – Getting inspired
a. Basic concept (electricity, light, friction…)
b. Current events (energy crisis, global warming, large asteroids smashing into the earth…)
c. Current research topic (fusion, neutrinos, Higgs boson…)
d. A fun demonstration (can crusher, Tesla coil, freezing things with liquid nitrogen…)
e. “Theme” Physics of … (baseball, roller coasters, cell phones…)
2. Make it interesting
a. If your initial idea came from a basic concept how can you relate it to current research?
b. How can you relate your current research to basic concepts?
c. Make a simple fun demonstration that illustrates your idea.
d. Engage your visitors with hands on activities, puzzles or games!
e. Say what you want to say in many different ways (demo, activity, poster, handout, “take-me-home”).
3. Focus- What is your objective?
a. Increase knowledge
b. Increase awareness
c. Change attitudes/opinions
d. Motivate
e. Excite

4. Be organized! Keep it simple! Be brief!
You only have a split second to catch your visitor’s attention and keep it. Think about how things will actually be set up. If you plan it out beforehand things will go much smoother on the day of the Physics Fair.
