Welcome to the planning page for Physics Fair 2007. Physics Fair is a new outreach effort to bring physics demonstrations and explanations of our research here at UW to the general public. See the link below for the public website.

This box will always contain current information about planning, including how to sign up and participate in the Physics Fair.

Note the date for the fair is Saturday, Feb 16, 11 am - 4 pm.

Here are notes from yesterday's meeting. We'll meet again just before the fair, Feb 11 @ 4 pm.

1. Signs - Please get your final titles to Hillary by this Friday, January 18th (if you haven't already). If you don't, then your sign will read what is below. Once again, it would be nice if you came up with a creative, yet descriptive title.

Quantization in Atomic Physics
Ice Cube
Plasma Toys
Space Place
General Physics
Nonlinear & Quantum Optics
Low Energy Neutrino Physics
Laser Patterns

It's getting to be time for another planning meeting for the Physics Fair. I'm thinking after Christmas but before classes start might be a good time to meet. I know that some of you don't plan that far ahead, but some of us do so we'll set a date & time: Monday, Jan. 14 @ 4 pm

A tentative agenda:
1. Update on participation - we have 15 groups signed up so far! (Hillary & Rachael)
2. Layout for tables/demonstrations (Peter, Karen, Tim)
3. Budget (Hillary & Rachael)
4. Need volunteers for:
1. Recruiting help for the day of
2. Publicity
3. Signs
4. Food

Some of you requested help designing your exhibits so we have planned a workshop for next Monday, December 10 @ 4 pm in room 5280. Bring whatever ideas you have and we can help you develop them into something that will be fun for kids & families. Please invite any other members of your group who are involved with your display.

If you can't make it at this time, please let us know and we can meet with you individually.

Rachael & Hillary

Good morning!

I thought it was time for a quick update on outreach activities going on around here. Let me know if you are interested in helping with anything.

1. Physics Fair - it's not too late to sign up to host a booth or just to help out on the day of. We already have several tables lined up:

Paul Nonn - Plasma Physics Toys
Peter Timbie - Cosmology
Lisa McGill - The Zero Gravity Team
Adam Dally - Laser Patterns
Dante Passmore - Daya Bay Neutrino Group
Brett Underwood - Exploring Theoretical Physics
Brian Lancor - Quantization in Atomic Physics
Sam Hurley - Medical Imaging

Pizza Lunch/Information Session on Monday -
1. Invite your friends, research groups, classmates, etc. Word of mouth is the best way to get people involved.
2. Matt Palotti will order pizza
3. Meeting will have two parts: First will be more formal, we'll talk about what the physics fair is, then Hillary, Bret, and I will talk about experiences doing this kind of thing and show off some demos. Second, we plan to let people interact with demos, brainstorm, and talk about ideas. Sign up sheet will be on hand for those ready to commit.

Hi Physics Fair Folks,

http://ups.physics.wisc.edu/physicsfair/files/pizza%20lunch_0.pdf

I just wanted to remind you that we are meeting on Wednesday at noon in room 3290 (plasma conference room). At Tim's suggestion, I'll order a couple of pizzas and we can do $1 slices. (Any objections to Ian's?) We have to practice eating pizza while talking to get ready for our big meeting/information session on Monday (Oct 29) at noon in room 4274.

Here's the plan:

Update: Hillary can't make Oct. 31, so I propose we move the pizza lunch to Oct. 29 at noon. Anyone see a problem with that?

Also, I just heard from David Willey that he's happy to do a mini-show that morning.

See below for notes on yesterday's meeting. Next meeting will be Oct. 29 at noon (with practice pizza). Hopefully the new time will be better for more people. For more information see: http://ups.physics.wisc.edu/physicsfair/

At Baha's suggestion, I invited Dan Hooper to give a public lecture at the Physics Fair. He'll be doing the department colloquium that week and is happy to stay and give a talk for us as well. He has a new book about dark matter and cosmology - Dark Cosmos. Here is his web page:

Thanks!
